Project in Lota
A coal mining town
We support projects with our Sisters in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, and Vietnam. In Chile, among several projects, the most important for us is the help given to a school of 800 students in Lota. It is a very poor mining town. It used to live from the exploitation of a coal mine that lay under the Pacific Ocean. With the closing of this mine, the town was ruined. The only resource now is the fishing industry. To survive, a few people carve coal blocks for tourists. The government provides food aid to the school, so that the children can have a hot meal at noon - perhaps the only meal of the day. Lately, the government has cut the subsidy by four. One child offered a dramatic solution:
"We are four students in our family. Each one can eat one day out of four."
This is why our project in Chile is intended for food, medical and school aid through a Sister who ensures the distribution in favor of the poorest, and also for the purchase of material for the school.
